My recollection from conversations with Chuck Dupree, former
secretary of TUG, who was involved with the VAX VMS manual
typesetting effort is that the many authors of the manuals
continued to write in the old in-house word processor format
(apparently NOT runoff), and that a conversion program took
that format and converted it to Plain TeX. Perhaps someone
currently involved with the VMS documentation effort can
bring us up to date on this ambitious, and impressive, use
of TeX.

I would be surprised if DEC did not guard the macros closely
as a proprietary trade secret. Perhaps DECUS could put
pressure on them to make them available to encourage
in-house VMS documentation to conform to corporate
documentation.

Subject: Problem with "Page Layout in LaTeX" from latest TUGboat

The LaTeX style file code published in TUGboat, vol. 9 (1988) no. 1,
pp. 80-82 ("Page Layout in LaTeX") is incorrect and will not work.
Apparently author Kent McPherson submitted his article in LaTeX source,
and TUGboat translated this into Plain TeX source plus made other
modifications.

A different style file has been created by Kent (who doesn't have net
access). It works on his VAX that runs LaTeX dated 7 Jan 86, with an
article style file dated 17 Dec 85. However, this style file does *not*
work on my VAX or PC, which both run LaTeX dated 15 Sept. 87, article
style file dated 9 Jun 87. Both of us run unmodified LaTeX and style
files.

Kent is updating his version of TeX and LaTeX, and will release a
LAYOUT.STY file that works on the most recent releases. I will post a
copy to TeXHaX, probably within a month, when his corrected style file
is available.

Subject: Underlined and Centered text in LaTeX macro

I have a macro which contains
  \begin{center}
     \underline{#1}
  \end{center}

This works fine provided #1 is not too long. If #1 is long then the text is
not broken into lines and overfull hbox results. I know that underlined
text is poor document design, but does anyone have a solution to this
problem?

Subject: Painless way to typeset EVERYTHING in sans-serif
Date: 2-MAY-1988 22:33:54.12

Im sure this question has been asked hundred times already, but I still
don't know how to do it (forgive a beginner);

Using standard LaTeX, what is the simplest way to have a ``whole'' document
typeset using only \sf type fonts ?
Everything means: everything, except math italic and math symbol.

I tried the real stupid approach: \def\rm$\sf. That works quite well. What
is left are:
- \it, \sf and therefore \em, they switch to italic/slanted ROMAN
- \bf (used extensively in chapter headings and such), switches to
  boldface roman,
- footnotemarks. As they are typeset as $$number$ they use math numbers,
  which are in roman again.

The last one I know how to take care of (redefine the command which makes
the footnote mark), the first two I don't.

The real hassle is the following: I wouldn't mind some characters being from
the wrong font (at this early stage, I sure will mind later), but the laser
printer has to load a whole set of roman font, just because of a chapter
heading and some emphesized text, so it can't do a single page without having
to reload fonts all the time. I would love to get rid of that.

Thanks a lot in advance !

Subject: dvialw patch to workaround UltraScript bug

A bug in early versions of Imagen's UltraScript (= PostScript clone)
prevents it from working correctly with Beebe's dvi-alw, among others.
Imagen claims that it will be fixed in the next version. They also
have a patch you can install to make any driver encountering the
problem (symptom: InvalidAccess error) work, at the expense of some
overhead doing an exception handler trap.

However, the point of this note is to report that I have a workaround
patch for dvi-alw (actually, it's prolog file, dvi-alw.ps). This patch
has some overhead of its own, if you use a few characters apiece from lots
of fonts, but it should be quite minimal.

Below is a diff between version 17 (18-Sep-87) of dvi-alw.ps and my patched
version:

Subject: Troubles with floats

Greetings,
I am having troubles with floats. I have about 11 figures and 10
tables. I was trying to put them all at the end of the text. However,
LaTex told me that "too many unprocessed floats". I guess LaTex would
process these float only if it saw \end{document}. Is there any other
ways to enforce the processing of floats? I use begin{figure}[p] to put
each figure in one page.
Then, I was trying to put all the pictures, tables in the middle of
the text. What happened was that figure 1, and tables 1 -- 7 were put inside
the text while the rest of floats were put at the end of the paper (after
the referece). I wonder how this could happen! Since my references takes
about 20 pages and the whole paper (plus floats) takes about 80 pages, I
expected all the floats show up in the middle of the text, or at least
before the references.
Another thing is, few figures are too large to fit in
one page. I divide the figure into two pages, one page for pasting the
picture and the second page for the legend. What happened was the first
page of figure 2 appeared on page 27 and the second page of figure 2 appeared
on page 53. Is there a way to control the placements of figures so one
can follow the other?
This is an emergency. I appreciate your early response. Please
response to me directly if possible.

I am typesetting a tonal language and am using leading punctuation,
specifically `-', for the tone marks. I get linebreaks like this: `-
'. Here are two macros that fail to cure the problem. Can anyone advise
how to suppress the line break after a hyphen in selected contexts
while allowing breaks at explicit hyphens in English text?

Subject: Displaying text within large brackets

I need some text set between large square brackets, eg

            --- ---
A glooming peace this morning
with it brings / The sun for
sorrow will not show his head
Go hence to have more talk of
these sad things / Some shall
be pardoned and some punished
            --- ---

If I say :

     \newbox\boxa
\setbox\boxa=\vbox{\hsize=2in A glooming peace this morning with
it bringsc/ The sun for sorrow will not show his headc/ Go hence
to have more talk of these sad thingsc/ Some shall be pardoned
     and some punish\`ed}
     $$\left[\box\boxa\right]$$

then the square brackets extend way way down beneath the end of the text,
enclosing a whole pile of blank space which is not specified. Clearly I
have misunderstood something about math mode. What is it? I need to do
this lots of times: I am certainly not going measuring each para so that
I can say \vbox to<dimen> each time by hand!

Subject: TeX/LaTeX Circuit diagrams

I'm inquiring if anyone has any knowledge or ideas on how one could do
electrical and mechanical circuit schematics directly in a TeX/LaTeX
wordprocessing sourcecode for directly `printing in' an engineering
diagram, rather than doing them by hand after the final version has been
output. The idea being that the symbols would be created in METAFONT and then
be `laid out' at the place in the Tex/LaTeX file instead of just designating
a vertical and horizontal skip to be filled in later by photocopying. This is
a tentative programming project that I regretfully won't be able to do, but
any information to assist in learning how it could be done by someone would be
appreciated for future users.

Subject: A latex problem

When formatting the document shown below, latex puts an line of white
space between paragraphs when the condition stated in the paragraph
holds. Changing "\par" to a blank line doesn't remove the white

One solution to this problem is to rewrite the paragraph so the
condition doesn't hold. Somebody else may be able to think of a

Subject: Need LaTeX help - underlining

This may be a very simple thing to do, but I haven't been able to make
it work, and haven't seen anyone address the issue in old Digests
available here.

Certain legal documents are required to use underlined text, for
blocks of up to paragraph size. I can underline a word at a time, but
there has to be a better way to do it. I have been completely unable
to make underlining for a large block of text work as it should.
Linebreaking doesn't seem to work at all, and if I break lines
manually (ugly in itself) they aren't adjusted properly. (Seems to go
into left to right mode or something)

Thus: how can I underline a large block of text (up to a paragraph)
properly in normal paragraph mode? All suggestions welcome,
including code for macros or new commands.

I am using LaTeX 2.09 on a VAX (VMS). I can figure out most of L.
Lamport's LaTeX manual with a little work, but don't know anything
about TeX.

Thanx!

I downloaded MAKEINDEX.ARC from APS:<TEX.PUB.MAKEINDEX> at SCIENCE.UTAH.EDU.

The whole file is 512644 bytes. As you can see from the contents listing below,
a large part of this (267841 bytes) is the compressed file IND.PS. This
is the postscript output of a paper on MAKEINDEX. It should *not* be
included, because (a) it assumes a postscript printer is available, (b)
this file assumes a postscript write-black engine, (c) this file assumes
pages stack in reverse order, (d) this assumes people cannot generate
their own output from the document sources. All of these assumptions may be
false. [I should add that this paper uses \special features of a particular
dvi2ps driver.]

Subject: Problems with LAYOUT.STY

In the most recent TUGboat (Vol. 9 No. 1), Kent McPherson presents a LaTeX
substyle option called LAYOUT.STY which graphically displays page layout
parameters. (This is not to be confused with the LAYOUT.STY which resides in
the rochester collection). It looks quite useful, so I typed it in, but it
doesn't work. This may be due to my own errors in typing in the program, but I
suspect not (I've found at least one ``real'' error). Does anyone have a
non-buggy version of LAYOUT.STY they can send me? Thanks.

Subject: MAC TeX? Drivers for IBM PS/80?

I was wondering if anyone knows of a distributor of TeX for the
MACINTOSH that is located in the U.S.? We recently ordered a version
from a distributor in Canada, but we couldn't get it through customs.
After looking through DRIVERS PREVIEW and DRIVERS LASER, I was wondering
if someone could tell me if there is a PD previewer or postscript driver
for an IBM PS/80. I looked through these lists, but no adresses or
net-addresses were given, so I don't know who to contact. Are any of
those listed PD?

Subject: footnotes in Latex.

First a little background info: We run TeX on an IBM 4341 under VM/CMS. We got
our TeX distribution from Maria Code in Jan this year. The Latex version is
May '86. I have converted Nelson Beebe's DVIALW to run under vm.

The problem: Using Latex there seems to be too much space between the footnote
marker and the word being footnoted. It would appear that Latex is putting
'stretchy' glue between the word and the marker. In one case TeX actually broke
a line before the marker. I have tried tracing the footnote macro but I nearly
drowned in the output.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on?

Subject: Problem with nested footnotes
Date: Fri, 06 May 88 10:04:07 -0700
From: kelem@aerospace.aero.org

A problem that comes up in our VLSI CAD documents is explaining some of the
acronyms. What I've tried in Latex is:

...the intermediate form IVAN%
\footnote{SVIF stands for Standard VHDL%
\footnote{VHDL stands for VHSIC%
\footnote{VHSIC stands for Very High Speed Integrated Circuits}
Hardware Description Language}
Intermediate Format} is ...

The resulting footnote looks like:

1 SVIF stands for Standard VHDL(2) Intermediate Format
4 another footnote

So the footnotes about VHDL and VHSIC are missing.
Is there a clean way to fix this? When I tried this in Scribe,
the result was pretty neat! (surprise!) It printed footnote 1 in a font size
a little smaller than the body font size. Then it printed footnote 2 in a
font size a little smaller than the footnote font size, and then footnote 3
was smaller than that font size---it reflected the nesting of the footnotes
in the font sizes used in the footnotes.

Subject: BibTex questions: summary of response

Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions about Bibtex. Here is
  a summary of the results:

1. I asked about how to get a bibliography containing ALL the entries in
a Bibtex database (BIB file). This capability is available in version
0.99c of Bibtex (the most current version, available on directory
   <tex.bibtex> of score.stanford.edu for FTPing).

2. I asked about the availability of Bibtex version 0.99c for the CMS operating
system. I have not been able to locate anyone who has a change file for
this version of Bibtex on CMS, and I do not know enough about how things
work (either with CMS or with WEB) to build one myself. (I also asked
about the availability of 0.99c for MS-DOS microcomputers, and got no
responses on this at all!) Short answer: it is not available (yet).

3. As an interim measure, I asked about the availability of an old version of
the APALIKE.BST file that would work with version 0.98i of Bibtex. Someone
was kind enough to send me an old version. I have also modified it a bit to
make it come somewhat closer to actual American Psych. Association style---
use of ampersands instead of the word 'and', and some other minor changes.
I will be glad to pass along copies, though I strongly recommend the APALIKE
files available on the Rochester style collection if you have access to
   version 0.99c of Bibtex.
