[comp.text] Ditroff drivers for the HP Laserjet-II ?

amit@umn-cs.cs.umn.edu (Neta Amit) (05/13/88)

We need a ditroff driver for a Laserjet series 2. We'd love to have
something that's in the public domain, or freely distributable, but
would be perfectly happy to purchase one.
Please mail recommendations/no-nos/horror stories directly. Will
summarize to the net.

Elan Computer Group has fully supported package called EROFF which includes:

o Enhanced DWB from AT&T including ditroff, nroff, pic, grap
	  eqn, tbl, etc.
	o LaserJet laser printer driver
	o PostScript driver
o Rough draft troff screen previewer

all under MS-DOS, as well as 40 different UNIX systems. The above
package for MS-DOS is $695 (price includes LaserJet and PostScript
laser printer drivers.)

If you only want NROFF, TBL, NEQN, and a few other goodies, that is
called NROFF/PC and is $99. (NROFF/PC is available for MS-DOS only.)

I have used the EROFF(tm) package from Elan Computer Group with a
laserjet for about a year. The package is not cheap ("you get
what you pay for" applies here) but has everything
one expects in a DWB package, such as device independent troff,
nroff, pic, grap, eqn, tbl, etc. You can get laser printer
driver sets for the HP Laserjet series or postscript printers.
They sell the package for a variety of computers and operating
systems [most of them UNIX(R)] including MS/PC DOS. I think
Elan Computer Group has a DWB license from AT&T; the package works
as one expects and any time I have had problems, their customer
service has been very helpful. For current users, they are
about to release an update of the EROFF(tm) package (you should be
receiving a notice in the mail within a month IF you registered).

I have used various public domain, shareware, and internal
DWB packages for DOS and the Elan package is the only one to
consider. For people who are interested in nroff with mm
macros, they have a nroff for DOS package for $99.00 which
works well with different kinds printers.

You should also consider the ditroff driver from Textware,International.
I have been using their drivers for the past 5 years on a variety of printers
including Diablo, HP LaserJet, and Compugraphic 8[40]00 phototypesetters.

The drivers seem bug free and are quite robust and usable.

I have no connection to this company except as a long time &
satisfied user.
