[net.periphs] Font formats fo DEC LN01 laser printer

ccc@cwruecmp.UUCP (Case Computer Club) (10/24/83)

We have a DEC LN01 laser printer. It's a nice printer, but I
have a problem. I have been asked to figure out how to make it
do multiple fonts (and graphics, if possible). I have a manual
which gives the escape sequence for loading in a font. After
describing the command, it says "See Appendix A for a description
of the format for a font record." Guess what? no Appendix A. If
someone could send me the appropriate information, I would be
eternally grateful.

It was my understanding that the LN01 was to be released in two "phases".
The first phase was as a line printer replacement: Fixed text fonts, fixed
line-printer-like interface. The second phase would support graphics, multi-
ple fonts, etc. As I understand it, the printer itself won't change - what
is missing is host support (in VMS) and documentation. It sounds as if the
manual you have, which mentions the font-loading escape sequence but gives
no information about how to use it, is a "phase 1" document into which a little
"phase 2" information slipped. You might want to ask your DEC salesman whether
additional information is available yet.

Fred Wilhelmson here (harpo!utah-cs!fmw, fmw@utah-cs) can send you a
package containing:
	1. Description of font format
	2. Software to convert Versatec fonts to/from LN01 fonts.

At least, these work for our Xerox 2700, which should be the same.
(I think.)
