[comp.text] Vertical spacing at the top of a page with TeX.

The best solution to this is not to insert spurious space
with `\ ', or bizarre constructions like `\noindent' (bizarre
from the standpoint of a command to produce vertical space,
that is), but rather \vglue, which is defined in plain TeX
to be a \vrule with the appropriate height and zero width.

Also, in the discussion on bitmap and TFM spacing, I believe
one person wrote (in passing) that the three stems of an `m'
should have equal width, and be equally spaced. This is not
true; the context of his message implies that he means equal
pixel values. What's more nearly correct is that the
stems should have equal optical width, not physical width.
And the best statement would be that it depends on the typeface
design. No simple rule like that will hold up.
