The best solution to this is not to insert spurious space with `\ ', or bizarre constructions like `\noindent' (bizarre from the standpoint of a command to produce vertical space, that is), but rather \vglue, which is defined in plain TeX to be a \vrule with the appropriate height and zero width. Also, in the discussion on bitmap and TFM spacing, I believe one person wrote (in passing) that the three stems of an `m' should have equal width, and be equally spaced. This is not true; the context of his message implies that he means equal pixel values. What's more nearly correct is that the stems should have equal optical width, not physical width. And the best statement would be that it depends on the typeface design. No simple rule like that will hold up. Karl. karl@umb.edu
