[comp.text] Help, I'm installing TeX

richard@aiva.ed.ac.uk (Richard Tobin) (10/06/88)

It has become my task to install TeX (etc) on our machines (Suns, but
maybe other things), and it's all just getting too stressful, so I thought
I'd ask the net for some advice.

I have a tape with TeX 2.9, LaTeX 2.09, metafont 1.3 (and lots more).

The problem is fonts.

When we used TeX in the past, it seems we used am fonts. Now the
default seems to be cm. Are these considered to be better?

TeX and LaTeX seem to work OK for the documents I've tried. dvi2ps
manages to substitute for missing fonts. But the previewers are less
successful. For example, dvipage seems to need cmcsc10.708pxl, and
there's no corresponding gf file (I assume it would be cmcsc10.142gf).
Do I really need to install metafont to generate this? And if I do,
is there a nice small subset of metafont knowledge that will suffice?

Is this just because of the bizarre choices people here have made in
their documents, or does everyone have these problems?

Is there a version of dvipage that understands the new font formats?

Thanks in advance,
 -- Richard
