gary@ethos.UUCP (01/31/87)

Could someone please tell me how to get the source
for TeX? Thanks.

Hello fellow netlanders, I have a friend working on her thesis
with TeX / LaTeX, and she has to place her page numbers 1/2 inch
down from the top of the page, and 1/2 inch in from the right
side of the page. (except for pages at the beginning of a chapter
where she has to place them at the top center.)

The problem is that her right margin is 1 or 1.5 inches in... and
the page numbers seem to align themselves with the right text margin.
(she is using the book documentstyle)

I usually field the TeX questions around the office, but I was unable
to help her this time, so I thought I would turn to the net for
help... I thought about editing a style file... but I wasn't sure
where to start, perhaps someone has a better solution. I almost always
use LaTeX, not pure TeX, so feel free to elaborate on any points without
fear of insulting my intelligence, I would be grateful for any assistance.

Perhaps while you're at it, you know the INTERNET address to the TeXHacks
at Stanford I've heard about in passing, I thought I might drop them
a note from my internet site...

Thanks in advance,

Greg

The problem is that standard DVI drivers are required to leave an 1 in
margin at the top and left. You may have to issue some backend specific
commands to translate the entire page image and then adjust the LaTeX
parameters to suit.

The TeXHax address is TeXHax@score.stanford.edu for questions and
TeXHax-request@score.stanford.edu to join the mailing list.

My drivers, at least, allow negative offsets everywhere. If you
generate a page header with something like

 \headline={blah blah\hfil\raisebox 8ex{\folio}} % 8ex is a guess

the page number should come out above the top margin, at a `negative'
y position (y=0 => 1 inch from top of page).

Another more insidious problem you may have is with the printers
themselves, which sometimes cannot print within a centimetre or so
of the edge of the page.

I am not sure how it can be done using LaTeX, but I wrote my thesis using
some plain TeX macros I wrote myself and had the page numbers up on the
right corner. Looking at my thesis, it happens that the number is about
0.75~in in from the right edge of the paper, and is about (what do you know)
0.75~in from the top; the right hand margin of my text is 1.25~in from the
right edge. If you are interested, I can e-mail you, Greg, my macro file.

I don't think one needs a DVI driver to be capable of doing -ve skips, I
did the above using the IMPRINT DVI driver for an IMAGEN laser printer; the
same also works under Micro-TeX using the EPSON DVI driver from Addison-Wesley.

I have a lot of MacWrite documents that I would like to convert to TeX;
doing this by hand is no fun at all. Does anyone have a MacWrite to
TeX (or LaTeX) converter?

Thanks.

Roy

PS: a converter going the other way (from TeX to MacWrite) would be
    appreciated, too.

MacTeX from FTL Systems (234 Eglington Ave. E, Suite 205, Toronto,
Ontario, Canada M4P 15K, (416) 487-2142) will do MacWrite -> TeX.
I don't know of any which will do the other way.

There used to be a MacWrite to TeX translator in the info-mac archives
at sumex. It was for MacWrite 2.2, but a new one may have shown up
there for 4.X.

Now why on earth would anyone want to go to MacWrite from TeX ;-)

kent@happym.UUCP (Kent Forschmiedt) (04/22/88)

I need a TEX formatter for my sysVr2 system. I can uucp anywhere
in North America. I cannot ftp. I have tried to get the attention
of latex-style@cs.rochester.edu, with no luck so far.

The GCC documentation comes as a .texinfo file, and in "Info" format,
with cross referencing, presumably for a browser. It is not in a
suitable format for printing... I would like any tools that deal with
these and related formats.

Please reply by email, or post to comp.sources.wanted.

Thank you.

Does anyone know of any work done to translate between TeX (math mode
stuff) and eqn?
