[comp.text] LATeX or AMSTeX?

Hi,

I am new to TeX. Has anyone used AMSTeX instead of the popular LATeX?

Is AMSTeX supported on mainframes as much as LaTeX?

I noticed some difference between the two. How much better is AMSTeX
than LATeX for the text job which needs alot of equation typing?

Thanks for info.

I use AmS-TeX all the time. It is intended for typing mathematics papers.
The main advantage, I think, is that there are many more special symbols
available; the kind of things that only mathematicians could love. But
this means that you need special fonts, which not everyone has. They are
available from the AMS in many popular sizes. But not (yet) in all sizes,
since they are in OLD MetaFont, rather than new MetaFont.
