[comp.text] Unusual problem with TeX and a QMS800 laser printer

We are experiencing an unusual problem printing TeX files to a
QMS800 laser printer that someone out there can perhaps help us
with...

We have had the QMS800 for a long time and it has been our TeX
workhorse. We recently had problems of the printer crashing
when printing certain TeX files. We traced the problem to the font
cmmi8 at 8pt (i.e. its natural size). I retrieved a new copy of the
associated .PK file from utah-science and that didn't solve it.
The fonts cmmi6, cmmi7, cmmi10 do not give us any trouble at all.
Is there anything special about cmmi8?

Any clues, wild suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Well, soon after I posted the last message we figured out a fix to
the problem. There is nothing wrong with the cmmi8 font. Rather it
has to do with the QMS RAM. There seems to be a bad spot in RAM, a
bad memory chip perhaps, and the font that happens to get downloaded
to that area is the one that causes problems. The temporary fix that
I did for now is to put a dummy font at that location. So things are
more or less back to normal and we will have QMS do a test of RAM the
next time they are around.

Thanks,
