[comp.text] Help needed with n/troff and ms macros

len@array.UUCP (Leonard Vanek) (04/05/89)

I realize that n/troff is obsolete and that everyone in this group is
now using TeX (:-), but in the hopes that someone here may have the answer
to my questions I am posting here.

I am using the version of n/troff and the ms macros that comes with
SunOS. I am experiencing two difficulties, neither of which I can
solve.

1) I have some full-page figures that I would like to reserve spave
for without actually printing blank pages every time I print a draft
copy of the report. I cannot figure out how to increment the page
number without actually printing blank pages. I tried fiddling with
the value of the ms PN number register as well as the % register and
got either no difference or a permanently frozen incremented page
number. I can't seem to find the right combination.

2) I am using the ms table of contents generator (XS, XE, PX) and
discovering that for entries of a certain length (i.e. just below the
length at which they would wrap to a second line) the dots and page
number are omitted. The only fix that works is to shorten the entry's
text somehow. I tried reading the macro definition to figure out what
it was doing but have neither the time nor the patience to try to
decipher that obscure code.

If anyone can help me solve either of these problems I would be
grateful. Please e-mail me a reply because I do not always get a
chance to read the news before it expires.
