[comp.text] looking for ASME bibstyle for BibTeX

gilmore@vax1.acs.udel.EDU (Scott Gilmore) (04/08/89)

I am in need of a TeX/LaTeX/BibTeX bibliography style for ASME (Americal Society
of Mechanical Engineering) journals. I obtained all of the available styles
from sun.soe.clarkson.edu, but none of them does exactly what I need. I even
tried to modify one of those styles to the ASME format; I got most of it working
but ran into a few glitches that I can't seem to solve. I'd rather not reinvent
the wheel anyway if someone has already done the work. If anyone has the right
style files or knows where I can get them, I would be very greatful for any
assistance. I would think that such a beast already exists since the ASME
technical journals are well known and have been around for a long time. If
you're unfamiliar with the ASME journal format but think you can help, the next
paragraphs describes it.

Citations are of the form

          (Gilmore, 1989)
          (Gilmore and Smith, 1989)
          (Gilmore et al., 1989)

Multiple occurences for the same author(s) in the same year are distinguished
by letters, as in

          (Gilmore, 1989a)
          (Gilmore, 1989b)

The named.bst and apalike.bst styles do this, but with square brackets. I was
easily able to make this change to parentheses on my own.

References for articles are something like

Gilmore, S.D., and Doe, J., 1989, ``Searching for the Right
Bibliography Styles with BibTeX,'' {\em Journal of Article
          Publications}, Vol. 1, pp. 100--130.

Notice that there is no key to the left of the reference, the first line is
indented roughly two spaces, and the article name is in quotes. Also, the
main words in the article title are capitalized (i.e., no change.case$ should
be used). The other types of references follow a similar format.

The reference list should be in alphabetical order. In all cases, titles of
books, periodicals, and conference proceedings should be in italics.

I was able to make the named.bst style use quotes around the article names and
separate fields with commas instead of periods. However, I could not figure
out how to prevent an extra comma after the article quotes. I also had a couple
of other problems, but I won't go into them here.

As I said, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
