Newsgroups: comp.text Subject: New dvi2ps, TeX/LaTeX Guide and Other Expires: References: Sender: Reply-To: jbw@cisunx.UUCP (Jingbai Wang) Followup-To: Distribution: usa Organization: Univ. of Pittsburgh, Comp & Info Sys Keywords: As of today, the version of dvi2ps and TeX/LaTeX guide I submitted to june.cs.washington.edu are moved into ~/tex in anonymous under the name w_dvi2ps.tar.Z and TeXGuide.tar.Z. In case any one missed the previous messages, this version of dvi2ps are rather unique compared to all the other ones in the following ways, 1. continuous fonts size (not like Knuth said should be at those magic magsteps), e.g., \font\cmreighty=cmr17 at 80pt to give exactly 80-point font size. 2. on-line help on dvi2ps and TeX/LaTeX through $dvi2ps -H and $dvi2ps -H tex 3. Three specials to include good PostScript file (\psfig), non-standard PostScript files \special{psfile filename} and full/multi-page PostScript files \special{pspage filename}. 4. PostScript commands can be used directly in TeX file by \special{ps-string PostScript commands} Among other things are Adobe fonts, etc.. The file TeXGuide.tar contains a 110-page guide of TeX/LaTeX in PostScript format and paged ASCII format (with a viewing file cdoc.c to view), a non-trivial LaTeX format thesis.tex together with the macros *.sty. I got the feed back that the file texint.ps does not print properly on his particular PostScript printer that prints in a reverse order, and I need to check on that. Update of these programs/files is to follow up immediately, once I can get answers from the net for the following two questions: 1. Is TeX public domain? shareware? or just a free software that can be redistributed? Many people call it public domain, but some people do not agree because they saw the copyright notes in *.web. 2. I have created one thing called TECPS for the TEC.mak Scribe database package (developed by myself), and I intend to incorporate it into dvi2ps and TeX. The name I thought of is TeXps. What is it? I am going to borrow some space from ~/tmp anonymous, june.cs.washington.edu to store the file TECPS.ps for the netters to ftp and print on a PostScript printer. What is does it to provide PostScript like commands in Scribe/TeX, like \moveto{0 0}\lineto{72 72} to draw a line. There are many many features in TECPS, and I try to have them all in dvi2ps. My question to the net is: is it welcome? and is it worth it? If I can get enough votes, I will have it ready in two weeks. The reason I need the votes is I need motivation, because I personally do not use TeX to write my own thesis and proposals (instead I use my version of Scribe). Whenever I am motivated by local or remote users, I do some creative hackings on TeX as well. JB Wang jbw@pittvms.bitnet jbw@unix.cis.pittsburgh.edu
