Do anybody know where (how) to obtain VorTeX (no ftp)? Could somebody comment
on how good it is, especially if it is suitable for people used to Macintosh
style editing (WYSIWYG).
Thanks in advance!

Our group of TeX/LaTeX users has been using 300 dpi laser printers for a long
time. Now we want to see important stuff printed on our 1200 dpi Linotype
typesetter than speaks only PostScript, as far as we know. I can think of
four ways to do it:
Compute the PK fonts for that magnification and use DVIALW. I suspect that
computing the fonts may take a while and that PostScript files that contain
1200 dpi fonts may be pretty hefty. Has anyone done it? How bad is it?
Convert the METAFONT descriptions of the TeX/LaTeX fonts to scalable PostScript
fonts and download them. Is that possible? Has anyone done it?
Come up with the font metrics for the standard PostScript fonts and use them.
This would probably require a PostScript plain.tex and lplain.tex that would
make DVI files that can only be printed on PostScript printers and would not
look like documents that use the TeX fonts. I've heard rumors that this has
been done. Would anyone care to substantiate same?
Convince Adobe to add the TeX/LaTeX fonts to the standard PostScript fonts.
I won't hold my breath for that one.
Any comments or suggestions? Kindly reply to TeXHaX or direct to me,

Two persons asked for Hebrew fonts in issue 89-21.
As both display Arpanet address, they need nothing else than sending a piece
of mail to LISTSERV@TAUNIVM on BITNET.
The SUBJECT field is ignored and the contents of the message ought to be
GET IVRITEX PACKAGE
As far as I know Arpanet users should send their mail as follows:
listserv%taunivm.bitnet@cunyvm.cuny.edu
BUT it MAY be that not all Arpanet sites can reach Bitnet thru the C.U.N.Y.
gateway. You might want to ask your local PostMaster about the right syntax.
IVRITEX PACKAGE is a collection of SOURCE files only (MF for the fonts, TEX
for macros, C for a preprocessor).

I would like to use sans serifs as the main font and keep the size and bold
function of latex. ( the command \Large \bf should give me a bold Large sans
serif and not a roman bold Large)

Subject: Update on the TeX archive server
Keywords: TeX, archives
The archive server here at Clarkson has undergone a lot of changes in
the past few months. It is finally stable but still changing.
Briefly, most of the files that are stored at Score are now at
Clarkson and updated very often. Also everything that was in the
latex-style depository has been classified into more appropriate
groups. Below is a list of all of the groups and a brief description
of each.
amstex The AMSTeX macros that are at score
amstex-style contributed style files for AMSTeX
bibtex The .web, documentation and styles from Leslie Lamport
that are at score
bibtex-style contributed style files for BibTeX version 0.99
bibtex-style-0.98 contributed style files for BibTeX version 0.98
cm-fonts The .mf sources for the cm fonts that are at score
lamport style files and .mf files by Leslie Lamport that are
at score
latex-style contributed style files for LaTeX
tex-doc manuals and documentation on TeX and MF that are
at score
tex-fonts contributed mf fonts
tex-inputs the .tex files needed to build TeX that are at score
tex-programs contributed useful program for TeX
tex-sources The .web files for TeX that are at score
tex-style contributed style files for TeX
tex-test .web files to test TeX that are at score
texhax Collection of TeXhax's by Pierre MacKay (Malcolm Brown)
texmag Collection of TeXMaG's by Don Hosek
tugboat files from TugBoat that are at score
uktex Collection of UKTeX's by Peter Abbott
Instead of listing all of the files that are being stored I encourage
you to get an Index as it changes frequently and the Index of Indexes
itself changes often enough.
There are 2 ways to get files electronically:
1) BY ANONYMOUS FTP
An example ftp session is shown below. Users should realize that ftp
syntax varies from host to host. Your syntax may be different. The
syntax presented here is that of Unix ftp. Comments are in
parentheses. To retrieve something from something other than
latex-style simply substitute the appropriate group.
% ftp sun.soe.clarkson.edu (a.k.a. 128.153.12.2)
... (general blurb)
user: anonymous
password: <any non-null string>
ftp> cd pub/latex-style (where the files are)
ftp> ls (to see what is there)
... (lots of output)
ftp> get Index
... (more blurb)
ftp> quit
2) BY MAIL
To retrieve files or help documentation send mail to
archive-server@sun.soe.clarkson.edu with the body of the mail message
containing the command help or index or send. The send command must
be followed by latex-style (or the appropriate group) and then the
files you want. Users who are not in the uucp maps database are
strongly encourage to include a path command followed by a path from
clarkson to you. If you don't include a path command, your mail may
not get to you and will definitely be delayed as I will have to mail
it by hand. You should realize that Clarkson does not have a uucp
connection, therefore you must send it to an internet or bitnet host
that does have a uucp connection. Therefor something like
uunet!foo!bar is guaranteed to bounce but foo!bar@uunet.uu.net should
work. Basically if your address is not in the domain format you must
find a way to turn it into one.
There is one limitation that you must be aware of, the archive-server
will not send files more than 100k. That means that you can not
request large files such as tex.web and that if you request a large
number of files in one message it may be rejected because the sum is
greater than 100k.
For example, user@host.UUCP should send:
To: archive-server@clarkson.edu
Subject:
path user@host.UUCP
send latex-style Readme Index
send latex-style resume.sty

(see the symbolic code in Volume E, which is a bit more meaningful than
the numeric data)
The spacing in these fonts is designed under the assumption that 7pt type
is used for subscripts of 10pt, 6pt for subscripts of 9pt, and 5pt for
subscripts of 7, 6, and 5 pt. The amounts were based on measurements of
industrial practice from Monotype days. Other \fontdimen values would
be appropriate for other font family groupings.

TeXhax V89 #21 included a query from a Sankara Rao, whose e-mail address
appeared as:
SYSTEM@power.eee.ndsu.nodak.edu
I attempted to reply to this address directly (at the same time sending a copy
of my reply to TeXhax, which presumably will be published in due course). I
specified the addressee as:
SYSTEM%power.eee.ndsu.nodak.edu@uk.ac.ucl.cc.nss
for access to Satnet from the UK, but the mail was bounced at the UK gateway;
presumably it didn't like the look of five-level domain nesting.
After the mail was bounced, I attempted to send my reply to:
SYSTEM%power%eee.ndsu.nodak.edu@uk.ac.ucl.cc.nss
This time the mail has been bounced at sri-????.arpa, with the reason
``node power not known''.
Before I try the next possible combination (SYSTEM%power.eee%ndsu.nodak.edu),
can anybody tell me what I SHOULD have written, and could all contributors
PLEASE ensure that their e-mail addresses are published CORRECTLY.

Subject: Decimal alignment in LaTeX
Keywords: LaTeX, decimals
sdoyle@fed.frb.gov asked recently about LaTeX tables with columns of
figures aligned on the decimal point. It can easily be done using the
@{} command as one of the column formatting arguments in a tabular
environment. In plain English, you put the number up to the decimal
point in one column, and the number after the decimal point in the next
column; then you typeset the two columns with zero space between them.
It is a bit clumsy putting all the ampersands in, but a good editor
can help.
Here is an example of a table that I did for a book recently:
it looks ghastly because I have stripped out the spaces and broken
lines to get it within the 80 column requirement of the mailers.
Actually, it was quite easy to type; I laid it all out visually.
If you want to *see* what is happening, you will have to replace
"&" with " & ", and " ." with ".", then go in and align some of the
ampersands by eye.
The table is wide: I printed it landscape on A4.
