Our site seems to have a problem with the margins on our Apple
Laserwriter printers. When using LaTeX, we cannot seem to get
the margins that are specified by the report, book, or article
modes.
I have checked the source files of the modes and calculated what
the margins should be, converting the values of \oddsidemargin,
\evensidemargin, and \textwidth to inches using the conversions
factors listed on page 57 of _The TeXbook_. The values are correct
for producing equal size margins in [oneside] mode, and also for
producing text skewed toward the binder in [twoside] mode. However,
when we actualy print pages on our laserwriters text is consistantly
skewed between 1/8in and 1/4in to the right side of the page. Thus,
in [twoside] mode, text on odd pages appears to be centered and text
on even pages appears way over on the right side. In [oneside] mode,
text is simply skewed right.
My question is this: Are there any problems in the way TeX calculates
margins? When I override the margins entirely and express the margins
in inches, they become slightly better, but not much. Both of our
postscript printers have the same problem, leading me to believe that
it is not the printers. Am I wrong? What about other TeX variables
that I am not taking into account? Could the problem be in our DVI
to postscript conversion program?
Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
