I need some advice on buying a laser printer. I have a AT&T 3b1 with 2 meg of RAM. As my fiance and I are planning to return to graduate school soon, I thought that buying a laser printer would be very helpful to us. I use TeX for my document processing and am confident that I can bring it up on my 3b1. My question is, what type of printer should I buy? I have done some preliminary shopping and have determined that HP Laserjet format printers can be had for as little as $1400. On the other hand, Postscript printers seem to start at about $2500 and go up. I am somewhat familiar with Postscript and am confident that I can patch bad software obtained from the net, as I did to the DVI to PS converter that we have at work. I am not at all familiar with HP Laserjet format, and this brings up many other questions. Especially since the price of HP emulating printers is much more within my budget. Some other questions: 1. What are the pitfalls the HP Laserjet format? 2. Is there a public domain DVI to HP converter? 3. How does the quality of HP emulating printers compare to the Postscript printers? 4. Is there documentation, or are there books on the HP format? 5. Any other advice? E-Mail to me or post any replies. Thanks in advance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- William R.
