[net.periphs] Writable optical disks?

Writable optical disk? I didn't know there was such a thing.
It seems like only a couple of years since the LaserDisk first
came out. At that time the idea of a writable optical disk was
a pie-in-the-sky. How come I never heard of this "Optimem" before?
How long has this technology been available? Can anyone tell
me more about this new technology?

Optimem is a subsidiary of Shugart, itself a Xerox subsidiary. Their
optical disk drive is now being shipped in pilot quantities only.

Optimem is an "OEM", which means their products are shipped to others for
inclusion in systems. this is analagous to the situation of people who
manufacture subassemblies like brakes or carburetors, that the automakers
build into finished cars.

the Optimem 1000 (?) has about a Gigabyte of formatted storage, write once,
read back infinite times. Call 408 737 3737 for more info.
