[comp.text] Need HELP with SB/DOSTeX

rouilj@umb.umb.edu (John P. Rouillard) (06/25/89)

I recently downloaded SBTeX and DOSTeX from simtel20.
The files unarced without any problems.

I created a format file with SBTEX, and tried to run it against
local.tex in the distribution. Everything seemed to go fine until it
attemped to write the toc file. At that time, it gave a runaway
argument message. I hit return and had it go on writing the toc.
Then I reran SBTEX over the loacl file and it complained abut runaway
argument again while reading the toc file (not unexpected). The
problem was eliminated if I commented out the expansion of the \LaTeX
macro. I.E. if I had a line with the LaTeX kerning instructions in
the toc file and I commented out the line, it worked fine (or so I
think, I couldn't get any printed output, see below).

I checked out the \LaTeX macro in lplain.tex and it looked fine.
Any Ideas??

After my failure with SBTEX, I created an undumped version of latex
from the DOSTEX distribution. I then ran this latex on the same file
and DOSTEX died after the first section command with a runaway
argument. The input tex file looked fine. Again any ideas.

Another interesting point, I ran a checksum over the executibles for
both of the distributions and all of the checksums failed. For those
of you unfamiliar with MS-DOS executibles, they have a checksum value
in the header that should represent the executible code.

Thirdly (you thought I was done didn't you :-)) I only have fonts (pk
files I think) for fonts 10 point and smaller. However LaTeX needs
larger fonts. I have the tfm files for all sizes but not the actual
fonts. Should I change lfonts.tex to use the smaller font at magsteps
and let the drivers scale the fonts (if they can) or am I missing a
part of the DOSTEX distribution (I had 6 parts for DOSTEX and 1 part
for SBTEX).

Obviously when I ran the printer drivers over the dvi output file from
SBTEX, I got many can't find font messages which is why I can't really
test the output that should work without errors. I am using the
DVI2LJ driver That was posted to comp.sources.misc I believe.
Unfortunatly the authors name escapes me, but I believe he was German.

If anybody has any other suggestions to getting SB or DOStex up and
running I would appreciate it.

During the summer I can only read news during the weekend.
Unfortunatly, our news software will expire articles after 4 to 7
days. So, if you could mail me the answers, I would appreciate it.
If there is interest in this I will also summarize.
