[comp.text] Page Makeup using troff

scott@dtscp1.UUCP (Scott Barman) (07/26/89)

I just got my copy of Computing Systems (The Journal of the Usenix
Association) and it contains an article that I've only read the abstract
of (so far) and seems interesting. If you get Computing Systems, check
out the article starting on p. 103 by Brian Kernighan and Christopher
Van Wyk titled _Page_Makeup_by_Postprocessing_Text_Formatter_Output_.
At a glance, it looks like it addresses many of troff's formatting
problems (widows, orphans, and page justification) and it requires one
hack to troff.

If there is interest, I can summarize the article when finished (please
give me a week-or-so, I have a couple of other things to do).
[Advertizement on]
If you do work under Unix, I do highly recommend you joining Usenix.
It's only $40 per year and you get mailed notices concerning the
conferences (including calls for papers), the newsletter ";login:", and
thier new journal Computing Systems (eventhough I do not like its
style, I've found some interesting articles including the one mentioned
above). If you have questions, send them to Usenix at uunet!usenix!office.
[Advertizement off--all I a member and was not paid for the above]
