[comp.text] IPA in MF

igb@fulcrum.bt.co.uk (Ian G Batten) (09/25/89)

Does anyone have an International Phonetic Alphabet font in Metafont?
Or, indeed, any other format? Half-finished developments are welcome!
Or anything!

we bought a full IPA alphabet from the Washington State University
(Dean Guenther was the contact - see a recent TUGboat for address),
but he doesn't supply source, if that matters to you. We bought 300
dpi, 118 dpi and 1270 dpi, and until we buy a 600 dpi printer...

Washington State University has one which they may be making pd (I don't
remember). Even commercially, it's reasonably priced and of good quality.

Well, some of the letters are of reasonable quality, but some
(including some more common ones) are not---there's too much unslanted
math greek masquerading as IPA.

I am doing my own letters as I need them; at the moment I only have a
few, but some are, IMHO, better formed than the Washington letters,
viz.
epsilon, eth, iota, yogh.
If anybody wants them, mail me.

I have a version of a Washington IPA font, and I could post it
if it were clear this was an ok thing to do. My copy has a notice
requiring distribution of "the" font set "in its entirety",
but I can't figure out whether this applies to the IPA font
(other fonts were included) or whether it would obligate me
to distribute the pk/gf files (which I no longer have, since I
generated my own) and .exe file (which I discarded).

I don't understand the point of the restriction on distibuting the fonts
-- I'm not sure it has a point. I can't seem to contact anyone from WSU
to clarify the situation. If anyone can figure it out, please post or
email me. It's a nice font.

I've appended below some excerpts from documents that accompanied
the IPA font which have some information about the rather
puzzling copyright and where the font can be obtained (presumably
on ibmpc floppy).
