[comp.text] VorTeX

terry@moogvax.UUCP (11/12/87)

In a recent book review in Nov, 1987, _BYTE_, (Vol 12, No 13), Alan Hoenig
mentions something called VORTEX:

When running the University of California at Berkeley's
VORTEX system, you see your source text an previewed
typeset copy on separate windows on your monitor.
You can edit either window, and changes form on
	automatically propogate to the other.

Does anyone know how I can get more info on this? Is it distributed?
On what computer(s) does it run?

Does anyone have any information on the VorTex system developed
at Berkeley? What state is the project in? Is there any software
available from it? Are there any other attempts at REAL wysiwyg
TeX systems?

Thanks!

Has anyone out there heard of a pseudo-WYSIWYG product named VorTeX?
And if so, is it in the public domain? Is it possible to acquire a
distribution tape?

Second question: Where can I find the versions of LaTeX that use
Adobe fonts?

Many thanks,

felix@AI.SRI.COM (Francois Felix INGRAND) (10/12/89)

A while ago, I asked for a tool to merge BibTeX files. Somebody
suggested I use the GNU BibTeX mode provided in the VorTeX package to
sort my bibfiles (which will indeed make the merging much easier).

Unfortunately, the version of VorTeX we have here at SRI (1.7 I
believe) does not seem to provide this "sorting" feature. So I
conclude that a newer version must be available. If yes where? If no,
My initial request still stands.

Thanks in advance,

Eons ago, I placed a copy of these on a.cs.uiuc.edu,
	pub/TeX/vortex-macros.something.or.another

that should give the the needed goop. Perhaps the vortex people will
respond with a more recent version?
