Does anyone make an inexpensive winchester disk subsystem for the Unibus. By this I mean a system with at least 20meg, low maintenance cost, and a purchase cost of around $5k. Right now we are running a PDP11/44 with RL01s and RL02s. These are slow, expensive to maintain, and take a lot of space. What I describe seems to be available for the Q-bus and most kinds of microcomputers. I haven't seen anything for the Unibus for much less than $10K. I don't think you are likely to get a Winchester system for the Unibus for $5k. The usual rule of thumb is that a Unibus interface board costs $4-5k, and that anything beyond that (i.e. the disk drive) is extra. So $10k may be about as low as it's going to go. -- Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!henry
