First, Ugh. Second, if you come across a converter to go the
*other* way, please let me know. My department is phasing out
Mass-11, and the few remaining documents have to go somewhere.
Finally, I think you'll have a very hard time with any kind of
complete conversion because Mass-11 simply cannot produce many
things that you'll find in TeX or LaTeX documents.

Subject: Problem with Zapf AMS Euler fonts in LaTeX

I would like to use the Zapf AMS Euler fonts in latex, but am having
problems getting all symbols to appear. Not really sure how its supposed
to work.
If I set font family 1 to be eurm?? math text, subscripts etc work
fine (the font is very nice), but if I mess with families 2 and 3
I lose some of the extra symbols. In order to get working math mode
I've commented out some of the code below. What am I doing wrong?

I am looking for a public domain version of the International Phonetics
Association (IPA) character set, if such exists.
Does anyone know of a Public Domain version of the IPA character set?
I would like it in .PK, .GF, and .TFM formats, and a .MF file would be
preferable. The only versions of the IPA font that I have seen are
in the $100 range. Is this true for all versions of the font set?

I am the original author of Epic. In a recent texhax issue,
JL_Braams@pttrnl.nl quite correctly pointed out the problem with the
trailing \makeatother. It was pointed out a number of years ago, and I had
made an attempt at correcting it in the various archival sites. But, I am
sure there are many places where the incorrect version resides. Please have
it corrected at your site. The correction would remove the \makeatletter at
the beginning and the \makeatother at the end. There have been no other
changes to the Epic macros. However, Conrad Kwok (kwok@iris.ucdavis.edu) has
written a eepic package that somehow makes use of epic or extends epic, I am
not sure.

I was looking into modifying a style file (article/art10) to fit on A5 paper
(thats half A4 for you non-europeans) as an alternative to reducing using
a photocopier. I expected to reduce point sizes and dimensions by \sqrt{2},
and took a copy of art10.sty, looking at it I saw all sorts of expressions of
the form `10pt plus 2pt minus 5pt ...'. It looks as if all sizes of a
particular style are generated mechanically from a master template, is this the
case ? Are the templates available anywhere ? I thought at first that it might
be done by docsty, but that only seems to strip comments.

Subject: Building LaTeX - what do I need?

Bowing to popular demand, I'm including a latex release with the TeX
release I am building for the Acorn Archimedes. Not being a latex user
myself, I'm a bit worried I may have missed critical bits out. Could
someone please tell me which style files are necessary to at least
cover all the examples in the latex book? I know there are many extras
I could add but I would like to know what is usually considered the
minimum set first.
Also, which fonts at which magnifications are needed? I have the
full set of TeX fonts at all magsteps from normal though magstep 5. Which
extra ones does latex use?
My apologies if this sort of info is laid out clearly in a readme somewhere
or in the latex book - I don't have a 'system implementors kit' or similar
and have to fetch style files etc. one at a time by mail.

Greetings-
We have just installed newer versions of TeX and LaTeX on our Sun
network and we've noticed a problem with writing letters using the
LaTeX style file. I appears that the new version does not place
any vertical space between the \closing and the \signature for
a person's handwritten signature. We take the same file and run
it through our old LaTeX and it works as expected.
I have also seen the problem in the C TeX version that is on the
ATARI ST using the same style file.
Here are the version statements from the OLD stuff:

standard DCL interface. People who wish to FTP it can obtain the

individual e-mail requests, but I suppose if I must...

A 'feature' of TeX, which is perhaps well known to texperts, but is new to
me, is that TeX scans past \fi in evaluating the conditional text. I first
noticed this for file names, but since these are systems-dependent, I give
a different example below. Can you guess the \count 0 that the following will
produce?

I have helped in producing two books using TeX on such a Linotronic. Both had
the main part of the text typeset using Times Roman (a built-in font in common
PostScript printer). One of the books required a lot of math, which was done
by generating the math fonts at 1270 dpi using Metafont, and using those fonts
alongside the Times Roman text. To my eyes this was Real Ugly (tm) but the
engineers doing the book insisted they liked it. One problem with this was
that the PostScript generated had the bitmaps for the math fonts in it. This
ended up consuming a lot of the limited memory in the Linotronic being used,
and only a page or two at a time could be typeset. Obviously using only the
Computer Modern fonts and no PostScript fonts at all would have used up even
more memory, and may even have prevented printing even a single page...
One alternative I have heard mentioned is that some company (ArborText?) has
PostScript outlines for the CM family (oh heresy!). These would most likely
be unsatisfactory at low resolutions unless someone got real good at adding
hints to the fonts, but might be reasonable at high resolution. Assuming you
can get a Linotronic to load those fonts, you may save on the string memory
that the hexadecimal encoding for bitmaps is so fond of.
Please keep us informed of what you find, a couple more faculty here have
books on the back burner...
