[comp.text] Textual data bases

kalra@cit-vax.Caltech.Edu (Deven Kalra) (10/29/89)

I just started reading this group and most articles I saw are on typesetting.
I have a slightly different question. Pardon me if it does not belong here.
However if any of you have any pointers for me, please post or e-mail.

I am looking for programs to manage fairly large textual data bases. The
data bases are formed of documents. I would like the data base program
to be able to

    1. Organize a document in the form of sub parts, such as chapters.
    2. Organize documents in some hierarchy to maintain related documents
    3. Allow reasonable fast searches through the data base based on
various keywords, combinations (and / or ) etc.

I have looked at PC based programs and one called Textware has come closest
to this. I also looked at Lotus Agenda and some program from Symnatec. I
want to be able to run this program on various Unix based machines. So
I would need the sources. I would also prefer it to be shareware/PD.

Thanks
