[comp.text] underline macro for troff

Hi,

I am looking for a troff macro which underlines only letters and
digits but not spaces.

As advertised in the manual, 
the .ul request in troff changes to an italic font.

The manual has a wonderful macro for continuous underlining.
The continuous underlining macro is:

		.de us
		\\$1\l'|0\(ul'
		..
