Postscript has the ability to deal with outline fonts, and tex is perfectly happy to use the laserwriter's internal fonts if a .tfm file is present. Why aren't there outline fonts available to download or a version of dvi2ps that uses .mf instead of .pk files? I can't stand not having the sizes and magnifications I need, nor should I have to create a new pk using mf (which I haven't figured out how to do) every time I need a new font. BRIEFLY. MF output bitimages period. Although MF and PostScript are similar in that they generate strokes they are different. One of the more interesting differences is that MF is SLOW, a couple of seconds per character. There is work being done that converts an MF file to a PS file but I am not certain of the current status. An article about one of the projects is in the newest TUGboat or Conference proceedings but I haven't read it yet. Finally, although you may dissagree, it is probably better to not use all sorts of non-standard font sizes even if you have them available. Two reasons 1) other sites may not have those sizes and they will have to edit the .tex or .dvi file that you send them (pretend they use dvi to epson) 2) (This is arrogant. I know it but it is true. Don't flame me as I won't read it) Most people don't know anything about page layout, color use, font use etc (I only know a little). The result is that when people start being creative the resulting paper looks amateurish or worse is hard to read. -- Michael DeCorte // H215-546-0497 W386-8164 Fax386-8252 // mrd@clutx.bitnet 2300 Naudain St. "H", Phil, PA 19146 // mrd@sun.soe.clarkson.edu --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clarkson Archive Server // commands = help, index, send, path archive-server@sun.soe.clarkson.edu archive-server%sun.soe.clarkson.edu@omnigate.bitnet dumb1!dumb2!dumb3!smart!sun.soe.clarkson.edu!archive-server ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
