[comp.text] LaTeX list environment question

I have a question about using (or defining) a list environment in
LaTeX.  How do I make the item sit by itself on a line, with the
paragraph following beginning on the next line?  It seems like it
should be easy enough, but none of the things I have tried have
worked.
