Well, if you wrote 500 macros without testing even one of them, you should
probably get into some field other than programming, because you probably
aren't cut out for it.

But you *can* make hyphens legal in control sequences; just say
\catcode`\-=11

TeX's flexibility is one of its great strengths.  Even things like "what is
a letter" (which is the same as "what is legal in a control sequence") are
fully controlable by the user.
