I would like to know all there is to know about extensions to the UNIX Refer format for bibliographic entries. I have seen several partial extensions including reuse of fields (e.g., the %M field), multiple uses of fields (e.g., %N being used for issue number and report number), and the addition of fields (e.g., %0 - %9, and even multi-character field names). As far as I can tell, none of our versions of Refer programs support any of these; maybe there is some freeware that supports certain extensions. Finally, I would like to know about formatting conventions for longer fields, like the abstract: How are super/subscripts, italic/bold, and footnotes and reference notes represented? Are troff codes the only convention? I have another 20 questions, but I will save these for the brave few who will reply. -- Name: Gary Perlman | Computer and Information Science Department Email: perlman@cis.ohio-state.edu | Ohio State University, 228 Bolz Hall Phone: 614-292-2566 | 2036 Neil Avenue Mall Fax: 614-785-9837 or 292-9021 | Columbus, OH 43210-1277 USA

Current documentation for refer (which says to use prefer instead) is: UNIX Research System, Tenth Edition, Saunders College Publishing, ISBN 0-03-047532-5. The software itself is part of Research UNIX, which is available to Universities through AT&T Software Licensing. It's almost certainly in Version 9 as well.
