[comp.text] Product Selection/Questions

phillips@acsu.buffalo.edu (Gretchen Phillips) (01/16/91)

Our Computing Center is making an effort to choose among text processing
systems for the Unix (Sun) environment. Given limited resources
(funding and staff) we are trying to make the wisest choices possible.
We have surveyed our users and they have shown a clear preference for
TeX because of its versatility and portability.

In addition to TeX, we have FrameMaker, The Publisher and Island Productivity
Series. We would like to concentrate our resources on just one of
these, however, our users show no clear preference.
If you have standardized on one of these products (or another one),
I'd appreciate if you could answer some questions:

What did you pick?
Who are your primary users?
	(professionals, secretaries, undergraduates, faculty?)
What factors did you consider?
(ease of use, features, price, history, some combination?)
Which features did you find most important?
(drawing, equation editing, templates, generating postscript,...)
How many users do you have?
How many workstations do you have?
What is your user/workstation to license ratio?

Also, I'd be interested in any other insights you might have.

I am not interested in generating a "this is better than that discussion",
I'm simply collecting data to see if I can clarify my position.
Please send e-mail and I will gladly summarize to this group.
