Can anyone tell where to find some information about OLE, the Object Linking and Embedding standard being developed/promulgated by Microsoft, Lotus et al.?

Well, there is a brief article on OLE in the latest issue of IEEE Spectrum, apparently written by someone at Microsoft. If you subscribe to MS's ONLINE electronic technical support service, I believe you can find everything you'll need there. You'll have to check with MS but I think ONLINE is US$750/year.
