[comp.text] Where can I get Rich Text Format specification??

jim@shograf.com (jim morris) (04/17/91)

I need to convert a document to framemaker .MIF format.

It looks like my current WP will export to RTF and keep most of
its formatting info. But I can't reverse engineer this RTF format.
Does anyone know where a spec for Rich Text Format can be obtained??

Thanks

Jim

anonymous ftp to indri.primate.wisc.edu (128.104.230.11), look in
the pub/RTF directory.

You can get on in the file RTF-Spec.rtf which is itself in RTF format
at the anonymous ftp host indri.primate.wisc.edu (address 128.104.230.11)
in the directory ~/ftp/pub/RTF.
You can also find there a translator from RTF to TROFF format (rtf2troff)
which can be adapted to convert to other formats.

If you're building a translator for another format, another approach would
be to copy rtfskel.c, which is a bare-bones do-nothing translator,a and
incrementally build in the capabilities you need. The trouble with using
rtf2troff as a basis is that it has all kinds of special hacks and kluges
to accommodate troff's (and tbl's) conventions, and undoing all of that
would be more difficult than starting from an empty skeleton.
