Thanks to those who replied to my inquiry about nonstandard fonts in Eroff. The main problem seems to be that we're running 2.1, which just doesn't handle nonstandard fonts properly. For the time being I'm testing a workaround: redefine ".ft" to execute a system command that uses a separate Eroff mini-job to force the font to be downloaded at once, then looks up its font identifier with "ljadmin -l", and sources it into the input text as a LaserJet+ code escape. Unfortunately elj resets the font after a code escape, so I had to write an output filter that strips the explicit font commands from the DVI.
