We are starting to investigate using optical disks to archive digital
imaging data. Can anyone
provide any leads on recorders, readers, and computer interfaces that
are available now or may be in the near future (1 year)? Of
particular interest is storing digital data on compact disks (CDs).
Any general comments on optical disks would also be appreciated - I
know very little about them and have not kept up with the literature.
Email to me: I will summarize for the net if enough interest (sorry if
this duplicates previous queries).
Thanks in advance.

You asked about storing image information on optical disks.
We, FileNet Corp., make a product which may be exactly what you
are looking for. Our OSAR (Optical Storage And Retrieval)
Library is basically a juke box for optical disks. It holds 64
disks and one to four disk drives. Total storage is 128
gigabytes with double sided disks. It will grab any disk, put
it in a drive and have the drive up to speed in something like
12 or 15 seconds. Most of the OSARs we are currently shipping
have Hitachi drives in them but I think you can also order CDC
drives.

or me directly via electronic mail. If you send me electronic
mail be sure to include a postal address for the literature.

Oh yes, so the lawyers don't come and take me away, OSAR is a
trademark of FileNet Corporation.
