[net.periphs] NLQ dot matrix printer recommendation wanted

dave@lsuc.UUCP (David Sherman) (05/29/85)

I'm looking for a replacement for a (rented) LA-100 printer.
I don't like certain things about the LA-100, principally
to do with the paper feeding. I'm currently testing a
Centronics 351, which is OK, but I"m not thrilled with
either the style or the size (too small) of the characters.

Anyone care to recommend a dot matrix printer with
	- reasonably fast draft mode (180-240 cps)
	- near-letter-quality two-pass mode (30-80 cps)
	- reasonably nice looking type (the LA-100 is fine)
	- easy-to-load tractor feed and reliable on large printouts
	- cut-sheet feeder available
	- RS-232 serial port
	- on-site service available in Toronto
	- price in the Cdn$3K range
?

Thanks.

I haven't looked at the full line recently, but we've used Anadex 9620
printers here pretty successfully. Their "correspondence" quality is
not two pass on this printer, but you might check out the rest of the
line.

The new Professional Printer from IBM looks really good, and the price
is amazing ($411 to users through the University here). For a little
over twice that, the Quietwriter from IBM (which really is quiet!) takes
font cartridges and does absolutely letter quality (no compromise) and
graphics. I'm not used to recommending IBM, but I have to (grudgingly
hand it to them on both these products.
