[net.periphs] Need Help with Racal-Vadic Maxwell 1200V modems

hal@isrnix.UUCP (hal) (11/06/85)

Recently we installed 2 Racal-Vadic Maxwell 1200V modems, both on dedicated
lines, one in and one out. Before using these modems, we had no problems with
uucp or cu, nor xcomm,uc, umodem, etc. Since using these modems, we can only
receive incoming calls, the system is unable to dial out from any resepct.
It appears that DTR is not being asserted at the right time.

Does anyone have any insight into these modems. We are running Xenix 3.0 on
a TANDY 16-B.

Make sure that your version of uucico has the RVMACS support compiled
in. A "strings /usr/lib/uucp/uucico" might or might not tell you this.
Most sites will not have it, as default is to leave it out. If you
have source, check uucp.h to make sure it is defined; otherwise, ask
your software support centre to compile it that way for you.

Then, make sure your definition of outgoing lines specifies that you
have that style modem.

I installed the Maxwell 1200V on 2.9BSD. While the adds state 3451
compatability, there are some differences.
The biggest is that all the responses end with \n\r rather than \r\n.
This breaks all the send/expect sequences.
You can copy the 3451 driver, and change the send/expect sequences, or
possibly just mung up L.sys (ONLY if you have no other way...).

When will these manufracturers get it through thick heads that not every
user of these products is a hacker hitting keys on a PC ?????
The Maxwell is only similar to, and certainly not compatable with, a 3451.
Any body want to take legal action for false advertising???

These ideas are probably not even mine, much less my employer's.
