o problems. Since the mailorder price is down to $269. (Compumail, Dec. 85 Byte, p.470 - (805)987-7015), I think I'll pay a little more for the insurance!

My aplologies for those who have already seen this article, but I received some mail that said the whole article didn't make it to the net. Recently, I've seen two requests for info. on the DAK1200 modem on the net. I don't own one, but I am in the market for a Hayes Compatible 1200 baud modem. A friend recently purchased one, and I was able to try it for a few days. I was using an IBM XT with Smarterm 100, a VT100 emulator. I set up macros to do auto dialing and logon on four different systems. Everything was fine in connecting to two of the systems, but the modem would not detect the carrier of the other two. In the two systems that I was able to connect to, I would first hear the 300 baud carrier, then about a half second delay, and next the DAK's 1200 baud PSK carrier. On the two systems that the DAK couldn't detect the carrier for, I then tried connecting with a UDS1200LP 1200 baud only modem, which worked. I also used an Apple IIe with a Micromodem IIe and Softerm II, and was able to again connect to those systems (at 300 baud). I wonder if these modems are being sold so cheaply ( $169. + $6. P&H ) due to this and who knows what other problems (although I experienced no other problems). This modem was even able to send a Break Character at 1200 baud, which other low cost modems seem to have trouble with. I did not put this modem through a series of exhaustive Hayes type tests, and only used it as described above. Has anyone else had this problem ? I have another friend that has had a Prometheus Promodem 1200 for about a year, with no problems. Since the mailorder price is down to $269. (Compumail, Dec. 85 Byte, p.470 - (805)987-7015), I think I'll pay a little more for the insurance! Since I wrote the above, my friend that owned the DAK 1200 has tried connecting to every computer and bulletin board that he could find the number for. He said that the only two computers that he could 'not' connect to were the ones that I could also not connect to (I think he's tried at least 10 systems). The two systems in question are two numbers for our company's computers (ITT Telecom), which I think are 2400/1200/300 baud modems from Multi-Tech. He says that he's buying the modem anyway, due to the savings and the excuse that he has now not to be able to do company work at home! I went ahead and bought the Prometheus Promodem 1200 which I am now using (and very happy with!). Unfortunately, Compumail raised their price to $299. when I called to order it, so I bought it from Logicsoft for $284. instead (who also refused to sell it to me for the terms that they had advertised).
