[net.periphs] multibus and VME disk controllers; are they standardized?

roy@phri.UUCP (Roy Smith) (01/03/86)

We're looking into buying some Sun systems but don't like the
prices Sun has on disk drives (i.e. $19.9 for a Fuji Eagle and controller).
If we buy the disks from somebody else, what do I have to worry about in
terms of compatability? Is one Multibus (or VMEbus) disk controller the
same as any other (i.e. will the standard Sun driver work with them all)?

I know this certainly isn't true for Unibus disks; you have to make
sure they do the same emulation to be compatible. Is this the way Multibus
stuff works or is there just one driver that works with every controller?

Roy Smith asks about purchasing disks and controllers for his SUN systems from
a non-SUN source. My information is that SUN OEMs their new VME disk controller
from Xylogics, and that one can get the same controller direct from Xylogics
for substantially less than SUN will sell it for. Can anyone confirm or
refute this information?
