Does anyone know of any recent (1980+) surveys of interactive devices that cover the design of special purpose terminals and the range of specialised devices such as badge readers and off- line data collection equipment. Ideally I'd like to find surveys with a human factors bias, but any info on exotic device capabil- ities would be appreciated, even just the order numbers for manufacturers brochures/catalogues. I'm interested in the interplay between interactive hardware and dialogue design. I'm acquainted with raster/vector/storage tube/ alphunumeric terminal displays and locator/valuator/pick input devices, and the human factors guidelines associated with many of them. However, without a knowledge of the full range of interac- tive devices, it's impossible to assess the true generality of dialogue design guidelines. Most of the material I'm aware of is restricted to keyboard input, smart vdu output, graphics worksta- tion configurations (e.g. PS300) and systems like SDMS. I'm curi- ous as to how much of this material can be generalised to more exotic devices. A summary will be sent to net.cog-eng or net.peripherals depend- ing on the bias of replies. -- Gilbert Cockton, Alvey MMI Unit, Ben Line Building, Edinburgh, EH1 1TN USENET: ..(EUROPE)mcvax!ukc!cstvax!hwcs!aimmi!gilbert.
