[net.periphs] Update on Incomm modem

root@ozdaltx.UUCP (root) (07/01/86)

I've had several requests to re-post the info on the Incomm
modem as well as a report on My thoughts on it to date.

The supplier has agreeded to extend their initial offer
until August 1 of 340.00 $ or 5 or more for 310.00 $ Each.

Appearently there were a few problems with the modem when it
was first released. They appear to have been resolved. I
also understand that though the dealer here, the folks in
Richardson (Tx) have been taken care of also.

I have had the modem running full-time for the last 10 days
and just put it on my feed line last night since my getty
wouldn't support 2400/1200/300 baud. I have used it mainly
to call other BBS's that support 2400b. On the systems that I
normally have problems with line noise, the Turbo seems to
be very effective in filtering the noise out, especially in
an "on-line" situation.

There is some room for improvement, however. I have found
that the 4 function switches in the back are recessed to
much for easy access and the power switch is inconvienent.
Both of these are minor since once the switches are set you
can leave them alone afterwards. Personially, I would prefer
a somewhat easier readable front display. They have mounted
red LEDs in back of a red plexiglas panel with white
lettering. From an angle it's difficult to tell which lites
are active. A plastic hood over each LED would solve that easily.

Now for the good news:
I like being able to software configure the modem and its
capability to store the parameters in non-volitle memory for
power-up. The Hayes commands seem to be all there as well
as an extended set, such as, DCD and DTR control, Guard
tones (550 & 1800HZ), Leased line.
Overheating does not appear to be a problem, mine
sits on the console and as stated earlier has been on for
the last 10 days. However, I think a few vent holes
judiciously placed would not hurt. - (Where's my drill??? ;-))

The 4800 and 9600 baud upgrade chips are supposed to be
available in September. No price on those yet.

To make a long story short, I'm quite pleased thus far and
feel my money was well spent.

CSP has agreed to extend their initial offer to

I have no connection with either of the above concerns,
outside the fact I've gotten good service from them.
