uusetup prepends a 'U' to the system name in the USERFILE & that seems to need to be there in /etc/passwd as well. do the subsequent directories in /usr/spool/uucp/sys also need the 'U' prepended or can(or should) the 'U' be deleted to make it all work? Uusetup also makes all the /etc/passwd entries uid:gid 4:2 for uucp systems. What gives here? What is the correct setup? - the documentation is ambiguous on this point & the 'U' isn't mentioned to my knowledge. thanks Hurf Sheldon Arpa.css: hurf@ionvax.tn.cornell.edu Lab of Plasma Studies 369 Upson Hall phone: 607 255 7267 Cornell University Ithaca, N.Y. 14853

But (so far) there's nothing in ultrix to keep you from setting up USERFILE and the like however you wish to. Anybody know the time table for DEC announcing VMS compatibility features for Ultrix...sigh... 8-) -- George Robbins - now working for, uucp: {ihnp4|seismo|rutgers}!cbmvax!grr but no way officially representing arpa: cbmvax!grr@seismo.css.GOV Commodore, Engineering Department fone: 215-431-9255 (only by moonlite)

You can modify the USERFILE and passwd file entries all you want as long as you keep them consistent. There is nothing special about the 'U', it just seems to be the convention that DEC chose to use. You don't have to prepend the 'U' to all of the directory files for each machine that you connect. You should modify the passwd file so that the UID for each uucp machine login is unique and different from the 'uucp' login. If you don't, uucico will fail.
