I don't have access to an MV to try this, but I have had the same problem with other flavors of UNIX. One solution which frequently works is to dump the root with cpio, which will not overwrite existing files if they are newer than the one on the tape. You can boot the mini system and then pull everything else in, assuming that there IS cpio on the mini system.
