note [I posted this earlier but because of mail problems I don't think it ever got out] We have a pair of uvaxIIs running ultrix 1.1 with RFS (remote file system) I believe we have the most recent corrections for RFS. Several times this past week both machines have gone into some kind of tight loop, without any sort of panic or error message. Consoles and all terminals were locked out Forcing a reboot on one machine fixed the problem, and the last time it unclogged itself after about 20 minutes without a reboot. We have the upgraded DEQNA cards, but still have the old ultrix driver. 1) Has anyone had any similar experiences? What did you find? 2) How do I force a kernel core dump in this state to attempt to debug the problem? I guess I have to go into console mode somehow since the console is dead on-line. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks, thanks, thanks. Paul Lansky Music Department Princeton University .....princeton!winnie!paul 609-452-4241 (bitnet == D0430@PUCC)

The DEQNA upgrade is useless without a corresponding software upgrade. The deqna driver in both Ultrix 1.2 and 4.3BSD have the necessary fixes. We had the same problem you describe when running 4.3, but it went away after our DEQNA upgrade. -- Larry Philps Engineering Computing Facility University of Toronto Usenet: {linus, ihnp4, allegra, decvax, floyd}!utcsri!utecfa!larry CSNET: larry@Toronto ARPA: larry%Toronto@CSNet-Relay
