[comp.unix.wizards] lpd problems with Sun

sdo@ursa.UUCP (03/24/87)

We're currently running a QMS postscript printer attached to one of our
Suns (which is running 3.2, but this problem also used to occur with an
Applelaser writer connected to one of our Suns running 3.0). At random
intervals, the printer hangs with the following symptoms:
1) lpq reports that the printer is ready and printing
2) The if filter may or may not be running
3) The of filter is stopped (status T)
4) The forked copy of lpd is running
5) The printer reports that it is in the middle of a job but is waiting to
receive more data over the channel.

I would suspect that the Sun is dropping the XON/XOFF signals from the printer.
Sun has sent us a patch to download to the printer which is supposed to prevent
this sort of thing, but the patch proves ineffective.

Any suggestions/experience with this sort of thing would be appreciated.
