I have recently installed Microport's System V/AT v2.2 on an NEC APCIV (AT Compatible) with 1152k(640+512). The installation of SysV failed completely on the first APCIV I tried. It booted from the floppy but then failed to behave sensibly. However, I tried another APCIV and it booted and installed perfectly. If anyone has had any experience with SysV/AT on APCIV's could they tell me if the have had similar problems? Secondly, I then tried to install Locus Computing Corporation's Merge 286(release 0.2) PC-DOS emulation package. The installation preceded without problem but when I attempted to run "dos" from the Unix System shell a got a System Panic. As I had a EGA card and the installation instructions suggested a bug in EGA handling I suspected that a CGA card would fix the problem. I rebooted the "Merge" kernel (still with EGA) to test if the same thing happened if I ran "dos" asynchronously (as the manual suggested). This time the system went crazy and scribbled over the screen, again suggesting an EGA related problem. Anyway, after the this crash the "Merge" kernel would not reboot. I rebooted from the floppy and checked the file system, all was fine and the old "non-Merge" kernel booted as normal. Confused, I reinstalled Merge to no avail, and then totally confused I re-installed SysV/AT and Merge and it still would not boot a "Merge" kernel. Does anyone have any experience with Merge 286 which they could share with me, specifically on the APCIV but information on any AT compatible would be useful? Finally I would like to praise the Microport SysV/AT product. It is the most complete and bug free version of SysV I have used since I stopped using Vax's. Combined with Dos Merge it would be a very useful product in a world where one must develop DOS applications but loathes using DOS itself. I would therefore find any comments on the use of the above two products of great interest.
