Hello wizards - We run 1.2 Ultrix on a 780 - 2 unibus, first bus: uda50 with 2 ra81, one ra60, tu80, lp second : 2 dmf32, dhu11, deuna The following is an extract from our message file: Apr 28 12:05 uda50a0: hard error, disk transfer error, unit 2, grp 0xffff8500, hdr 0x83fbf, event 0112 uda50a0: unit 2, ra2f: Error, Status and event Sub-code = 0x4a sn 128112 ra2f: hard error sn128112 status 0112 uda50a0: hard error, disk transfer error, unit 2, grp 0xffff8500, hdr 0x83fbf, event 0112 uda50a0: unit 2, ra2f: Error, Status and event Sub-code = 0x4a sn 128112 ra2f: hard error sn128112 status 0112 This is a new RA81, three months old. We have had problems with this drive since it was installed. This is the third time in as many months that hard errors have occured. The reason for posting, is that I have not seen this particular type of message before. /* * Copyright (C) 1986 University of Maryland Computer Science Department * * This code may be freely distributed so long as the copyright notice * and this note remain intact. Distributed 25 January 1986 by Chris * Torek. */ I used the program with the above banner to attempt finding a real cause. The results are as follows: % uda-error Type control-D to exit Enter `hdr' (hex) and `event' (octal): 83fbf 112 lbn 540607: edc controller error (code 10, subcode 2) Enter `hdr' (hex) and `event' (octal): ^D % Chris, what is this really telling us? These error are now occuring every 40-60 minutes on a moderately loaded machine. (2-4 load average) DEC has moved the suspect media to another location and these errors followed. I know there are some programs available to attempt bad block replacement under Ultrix if this is the problem, but have never attempted this. So, has anyone seen this type of error? What was your resolution? I know intimately how to "scrub" the RA81 and restore, but sure would like to avoid this as I just had to restore this drive last month! As our spool and user filesystems live on this drive and with noplace to move this data to, any information that can be provided on this problem will be gladly accepted. Thanks (in advance) for your assistance. -- Jeff Janock - NEC Electronics +1 617 655 8833 jeff@necntc.NEC.COM {ames, decvax, harvard, linus, mit-eddie}!necntc!jeff
