[comp.unix.wizards] /tmp vs. /usr/tmp

chris@mimsy.UUCP (Chris Torek) (07/04/87)

Something under consideration for a future BSD release is a truly
temporary file system---equivalent to swap-backed memory in that
things stored here may get pushed to disk if necessary, but will
not survive reboots. Editors, however, want to create temporary
files that *do* survive reboots, so as to recover editing sessions
after system crashes. One proposal is to make /tmp truly temporary,
and /usr/tmp `real disk files'.
