My Ultrix 1.2 host is on 2 tcp/ip networks. One is a LAN. The other is CSNET. I routinely run syslog, posting the output to a file. Periodically my host begins sending SOME of the syslog messages to the local file as expected and SOME to ANOTHER CSNET host (relay.cs.net). There's no obvious pattern to the types of messages directed to the other host. This is becoming a serious problem because of the volume of our messages being dumped on the other host. Has anyone out there ever seen anything like this? I'd GREATLY APPRECIATE any ideas or suggestions as to the cause. Maybe these observations and background data will help: - Messages sent to the other host come from several programs, including sendmail, dlogind, dnet-spawner. They have time stamps added by THAT host. It appears that some program(s) on my host is sending messages directly to their syslog routine. - Messages continue to show up at the other host even AFTER my syslog process is killed (as much as 2 hours after). - My routing table, as shown by 'netstat -r': Destination Gateway Flags Refcnt Use Interface sun-net bcsaic U 3 16667 de0 default relay.cs.net UG 0 770 xni0 loop localhost U 28 176 lo0 - My syslog.conf looks like this: 9/usr/adm/syslog 2/usr/adm/syslog.critical root phyllis - ifconfig statements from rc.local: /etc/ifconfig de0 192.9.200.80 -trailers /etc/ifconfig xni0 192.5.58.24 /etc/ifconfig lo0 127.0.0.1 -- Phyllis Melvin uucp: ...uw-beaver!uw-june!bcsaic!phyllis (206)865-3293 arpanet: phyllis@boeing.com
