I have been trying to install 4.3BSD on my MicroVAX II for several months now. We have a running Ultrix 1.2 system and have been using the techniques posted in comp.unix.questions and comp.unix.wizards. Our first attempt failed since there were two uda controllers defined in the configuration file and it was discovered that code modifications were necessary for the 4.3BSD-MicroVAX system using two such controllers. We only have one controller, so we took the extra definition out of the configuration file and made a second attempt. On the second try, we discovered that fsck could not help fix up the ra81 for use with 4.3BSD. We posted a note and received several replies with excellent information on the segment size differences between Ultrix and 4.3BSD. Code modifications were made and a new kernel built for the MicroVAX II. The third attempt led to a working kernel and file system. Unfortunately, when I used the /etc/ifconfig qe0 inet xx.xx.xx.xx broadcast xx.xx.xx.xx command the kernel panic'ed and replied: trap type 9, code = e, pc = 8002f766 panic: Protection fault syncing disks... 11 11 6 done As long as I do not activate the ethernet, everything seems to run fairly well. I would also like to make note of the fact that I have two DEQNA's and the Ultrix 1.2 system can not function with both DEQNA's configured in the system. I will post another note about the Ultrix 1.2 problem, but thought that it may be useful data. If this is a well know problem and does not deserve posting responses, please send mail to: woodward@eecs.nwu.edu or ernie@accuvax.nwu.edu or ernie@nuacc.bitnet Thanks for all the help in the past and I will greatly appreciate any advice anyone has to offer. I am having a similar problem though I am not sure what the author of the original article meant... It would be useful for me to know if anybody out there is doing either of the following on a MicroVax II running 4.3BSD successfully: Running 2 DEQNAS. Running a RKQD50 (or whatever the letters are) and and an Emulex QD32. I have had several problems whenever I have tired to do the above.
