[comp.unix.wizards] MKFS on SYSV

espo@bpa.BELL-ATL.COM (Bob Esposito) (08/03/87)

	I wonder if anyone can shed some light on the differneces between
	mkfs(1m) and dcopy(1m) concerning gap and cylinder size.

	Looking at the source code for mkfs.c, the given gap size is
	reduced as follows:

	f_m /= (FSBSIZE/BSIZE);

	Yet, the given gap size is stored in the superblock (s_dinfo[0])!
	When dcopy is run, it tries to re-organize using the superblock's
	gap size and cylinder size.

	My question is "what's right and what's wrong!!!" The manual for
	mkfs(1m) gives recommended gap and cylinder info for specific
	drive types. If I specify a gap of 7, mkfs reduces it to 3!!!

	Any info would be helpful.
