As several people have observed, the recent decrease in price of Sun-3's (all models) means that periperals such as disks and tapes now make up half or more (especially for those with substantial discounts) of the cost of a total system. That is, if you buy your peripherals from SMI. I'd like to be able to buy third-party peripherals for a number of Sun's we have. This includes both SCSI/ESDI peripherals for the low end Sun-3/60's and Sun-3/50's and SMD drives for the high end workstations like the Sun-3/160, the Sun-3/260 and the Sun-4/160. I understand that a lot of people out there have successfully done this in the past. Before I jump in with both feet and get into all sorts of trouble, I'd like to hear about good/bad experiences other people have had with this sort of thing. Along with general experiences, I'd like to know such things as necessary parameters for formatting, special jumper settings on the various controllers and whatever other cabling/interfacing problems you might have had. Also, the bottom line; i.e., how much did you have to pay. I'll be glad to compile a master list and post to the net. If someone doesn't want their name included, I'll of course respect that. But please, if you have information to share, let me know so I can include it. Vendor contacts are also appreciated. If there's already a list like this in existence, could someone please let me know so I don't reinvent the wheel..... I've collected bits and pieces from the net over time and I have a certain amount of information. Most of it is quite sketchy though.
