What I have never understood is why people spend their employer's
money playing at work when they could have a real computer at home.

				--or--

What I have never understood is why people play at work when they
could play real computer games at home.

				--or--

What I have never understood is why people play on out-of-date
computer systems at work when they could work on state-of-the-art
computer systems at home.

				--or--

You get the idea.

But seriously, on a home computer you don't have the hassle of having
to ask permission to do something, or of becoming root without asking
permission and then getting yelled at because you tread on somebody's
toes. You can make your own decisions as to what is important enough
to keep online, and what should be deleted, or backed of to tape or
floppy. You have floppies, which are a much more convenient storage
medium than tape for reasonably sized modules (even when you have more
than 400 floppies, like I do).

Best of all, you are *responsible* for the whole system; there's no
passing the buck, no blame shifted elsewhere...

>Buy a terminal and a modem for home use.

And be restricted to 1200 or 2400 baud? No way! With my home machine I
get the best of both worlds: immediate response, UNIX with windows,
the ability to write large documents and programs without swearing at
the modem, and background communication and file transfer.

Ah, now I see, you work for the government. Big brother, eh? You want
everybody to work on big machines where you can keep track of them,
not small machines where you can't. :-).

I always felt that disclaimers were silly and affected, but there are people
who let themselves be affected by silly things, so: my opinions are my own,
and not the opinions of my employer, or any other organisation with which I am
affiliated. I indicate my employer only so that other people may account for
any possible bias I may have towards my employer's products or systems.
